The Credit Union philosophy is “People Helping People”. Credit unions are not-for-profit cooperatives providing financial services to the member-owners who save and borrow there. They exist solely to serve these members, and not stockholders. Credit unions operate not for profit, not for charity, but for service. Funds on deposit at the credit union are insured up to $250,000 by an agency of the U.S government – the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA).

While both credit unions and banks offer similar products and services, credit unions differ. Credit unions are governed by a volunteer board of directors who are elected by and from among the members of the credit union. Although the directors serve as volunteers, they are required to go through annual training to ensure that they are aware of regulatory and compliance requirements.

Unlike for-profit banks and other financial service providers, the credit union is not driven by the profit concerns of a small group of stock-holders. Since the motivation for business is different in credit unions, fees are fewer and lower while interest rates paid to members on savings are higher and those paid by the member on loans are lower.

Eligibility

If you live or work in Jasper or Newton counties, or work for one of our Select Employer Groups (listed below), you are eligible to join Joplin Metro Credit Union! 
Immediate family members of all our current members are also eligible to join. Immediate family is defined as spouse, child, sibling, parent, grandparent, grandchild, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, and extended family. This includes step, legal guardian, and adoptive relationships.

Customers are Owners

The executive management of any company must answer to its owners. With a publicly-traded banking institution, shareholders care about only one thing: making money. In these companies, management often makes decisions that benefit the shareholder but inconvenience the customer. Shareholders might be happy when a bank decides to charge a new fee to increase revenue (and as a result, the stock price), but those who use the bank’s services do not want additional fees.

With credit unions, the set of owners and the set of customers are one and the same. All decisions should benefit everyone.

Credit Unions are Non-profit
As a result of the advantage listed so far, credit unions typically offer free accounts with no minimum balance requirements. Fees are generally absent from credit unions. Interest rates on savings, certificates of deposit, and some checking accounts often significantly exceed those offered by banks. In the same respect, interest charged for loans and credit are often lower. In fact, some credit unions are regulated such that the interest rate on loans and credit cards must not exceed a certain rate.

Original JMCU Building on Pearl Ave.

1950

Joplin Telephone Employees Credit Union was formed March 15, 1950, and served all Bell employees in the Joplin, MO district, and members of their immediate families and organizations of such persons.

1990

March 31, 1990 Jasper County Credit Union merged with Joplin Telephone Employees Credit Union. At the time of the merger Joplin Telephone Credit Union had 3,100 members, and assets at $6.5 Million. Jasper County had 1,300 members and assets at $1.8 Million. Jasper County served employees of Sperry-Vickers, Meekers, Ozark Engineering, and any educational institution in Jasper County.

1993

Several companies in Joplin and the surrounding area eventually were able to provide Credit Union membership to their employees, by approval of the Division of Credit Unions. Due to the diversification in the membership, the credit union decided on a name change to better reflect the assorted businesses they represented. On December 1, 1993, Joplin Telephone Credit Union became Joplin Metro Credit Union.

 

Today

Joplin Metro Credit Union has  2 locations in Joplin, MO. We have approximately 50 membership groups and over 5,700 members, which we serve in Jasper/Newton counties and the surrounding metropolitan area. We are currently at $55 Million in assets.
